Wonky Power is a creative institution in Houston—a record label, production house, and performance venue all in one, founded by Mario Rodriguez, a pillar of the city’s live music scene. From grassroots indie showcases to major cultural events, Mario and the Wonky Power team have shaped the city’s sound, stage, and spirit for over a decade.

When the time came to create a platform worthy of their presence, Essential Downtime partnered with longtime creative collaborator Richie Alejandro to bring that vision online. Richie played a key role in the early creative direction and introduction, helping shape the visual voice that the site would carry forward. From there, Essential Downtime took the reins—building, optimizing, and maintaining the digital home that now powers the next chapter of Wonky Power.

We built a CMS-powered platform that supports the full scope of Wonky Power’s influence—not just at their own venue, but across Houston’s wider music ecosystem.

Their event calendar is designed to promote and archive live shows at:

The design stays true to the energy of the brand—clean, vibrant, and flexible—while ensuring usability across mobile and desktop. For a team constantly on the move, managing sound checks and setlists, the site had to be both sharp and easy to update.

The entire backend was built to support effortless day-to-day management by the Wonky Power team, with Essential Downtime on call for ongoing design updates, layout refinements, and support as new ideas and collaborations emerge.
